THINGS TO DO IN THIMPHU EP 9: VAST BHUTAN
Greetings Travellers,
Are you fond of arts? Are you an aritists? Well, if you're then make sure to visit VAST Bhutan. It is a NGO established by a group of artists and in the studio, you'll find art works that will keep you fascinated. My name is Kinga and this blog will be about the first art studio called VAST Bhutan.
VAST Bhutan (Voluntary Artists’ Studio Thimphu) is a prominent non-profit art organization based in Thimphu, Bhutan. Established in 1998 by local artists and art enthusiasts, VAST Bhutan aims to foster creativity and artistic expression among Bhutanese youth. It offers a wide range of programs, including art classes, workshops, and exhibitions, which are designed to engage the community and promote the visual arts as a vital part of Bhutanese culture. The organization operates from its studio space in Thimphu, where artists, students, and volunteers collaborate on various projects, including murals, public art installations, and environmental conservation initiatives.
Over the years, VAST Bhutan has played a crucial role in nurturing the country's art scene by providing a platform for emerging artists to showcase their work. The studio regularly hosts exhibitions featuring contemporary Bhutanese art, and it also facilitates art-related events, such as the annual Bhutan International Art Festival. These events attract both local and international artists, fostering cultural exchange and broadening the scope of Bhutan's artistic community. Additionally, VAST Bhutan collaborates with schools and other organizations to integrate art education into the broader curriculum, emphasizing the importance of creativity and critical thinking.
Recently, VAST Bhutan has expanded its reach through digital platforms, offering online workshops and virtual exhibitions to adapt to the changing times. This has allowed the organization to continue its mission of promoting art and creativity, even amid global challenges. The studio remains open to visitors, and those interested in participating in its programs or viewing its exhibitions can do so by visiting its location in Thimphu. The organization also welcomes volunteers and donations to support its ongoing projects and initiatives, ensuring that art remains a vibrant and integral part of Bhutanese society.
The studio is open to both locals and travellers alike to explore the artworks. However, tour operators do not include this as part of the itinerary where as we include this place as it not only provides an opportunity for the local aritists to showcase their work, it also provides a means of passive income for the artists when travellers purchase art pieces. Purchasing one is not mandatory though. You can simply visit the place and appreciate their work of art. Let us know if this place is of interest to you!
