Greetings Travellers,
Art & architecture is one among the many aspects that truly differentiates Bhutan from the rest of the world, In Bhutan, we practise 13 skills which in local language is called zorig(skill) chusum(13). My name is Kinga and this blog will briefly highly about the institute located in Thimphu.
The National Institute of Zorig Chusum in Bhutan, often referred to as the "Painting School," is a remarkable institution where you can immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Bhutanese traditional arts and crafts. Established to preserve and promote the country's 13 traditional arts, known as Zorig Chusum, the institute offers you a unique opportunity to witness students honing their skills in disciplines like painting, wood carving, embroidery, and statue making. Each craft is taught with meticulous attention to detail, reflecting centuries-old techniques passed down through generations.
When you visit, you can explore the classrooms and workshops, where students typically engage in a 4- to 6-year program. This hands-on experience allows you to see the dedication and patience required to master these crafts. The institute is not only a school but also a living museum, where you can observe artisans at work and even purchase some of the intricately crafted pieces as souvenirs. It provides a deep insight into Bhutanese culture and offers you a chance to appreciate the skill and artistry that go into creating traditional Bhutanese art.
