THINGS TO DO IN THIMPHU EP 7: BOTANICAL PARK
Greetings Travellers,
Are you a nature lover? Are you fond of flowers, plants or butterflies? Then this place is a must visit for you. My name is Kinga and this blog is about the royal botanical park located in outskirts of Thimphu.
The Royal Botanical Garden in Serbithang, located just a short drive from Thimphu, Bhutan, is a vibrant hub for plant conservation, education, and recreation. Established in 1999, this garden spans an area of about 29 acres and is managed by the National Biodiversity Centre. The garden is home to an extensive collection of Bhutan's native flora, including rare and endangered species, medicinal plants, and ornamental flowers. The garden plays a crucial role in the conservation of the country's botanical diversity, serving as both a research center and a place of public education.
The garden is designed to be an educational space where visitors can learn about Bhutan's unique plant species and ecosystems. It features themed sections, such as the rhododendron garden, medicinal plant garden, and orchid house, each showcasing different aspects of the country's rich botanical heritage. The garden also includes a nursery where plants are propagated for conservation and educational purposes. Walking paths wind through the garden, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and observe a variety of plant species up close.
The Royal Botanical Garden in Serbithang is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Each visitor has to pay a nominal fee of Nu. 100 for adults and Nu. 50 for adults. The garden frequently hosts educational programs, workshops, and guided tours, making it a valuable resource for students, researchers, and nature enthusiasts. Recent developments include efforts to expand the garden's collection and improve visitor facilities, ensuring that it remains a key destination for those interested in Bhutan's natural beauty and environmental conservation.
The best time to visit is during spring & summer months when flowers are at its fullest bloom and the whole place is surrounded by flowers, plants, birds and butterflies. If you are a nature lover, a nature photographer, make sure to let us know so we can include this place as part of the itinerary. Pic: Royal botanical garden fb page
