THINGS TO DO IN THIMPHU EP 4: MEMORIAL CHORTEN
The National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu, Bhutan, is a prominent religious landmark that offers a deep dive into the spiritual and cultural heritage of the country. Built in 1974 in memory of the third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, it stands as a symbol of peace and prosperity. The chorten is designed in the classic Tibetan style with whitewashed walls, a golden spire, and intricate carvings and mandalas. As you walk around the chorten, you will see locals of all ages performing kora (circumambulation) while chanting prayers and spinning prayer wheels, which adds to the serene and meditative atmosphere of the place.
When you visit, you will notice that the chorten is not only a place of worship but also a hub of community activity. It's a common sight to see elderly Bhutanese gathered here, spending their day in devotion and social interaction. The interior of the chorten houses numerous statues, religious texts, and paintings that depict various aspects of Buddhism. The structure itself is a metaphor for the Buddhist path to enlightenment, and every level and room of the chorten is rich with symbolic meaning. It is also adorned with beautiful gardens and prayer flags that flutter in the wind, enhancing the peaceful environment.
The National Memorial Chorten is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, making it convenient for you to include it in your itinerary. Travellers wishing to visit this places will have to pay an entrance fee of Nu. 500. If your tour operator has this place in the itinerary, then it is a part of the package and you do not have to pay separately. However for guests from India, you will have to pay separately as sightseeing places where fees needs to be paid are not part of the package.
