THINGS TO DO IN THIMPHU EP 2: BUDDHA DORDHENMA

Greetings Travellers,

Bhutan is pre-dominantly a Buddhist countries and in almost every place you visit, you will come across so many temples and monasteries. I am Kinga and this blog is about one such place called the Buddha point.

The Buddha Dordenma is an awe-inspiring statue of Shakyamuni Buddha located in the mountains of Bhutan, overlooking the southern entrance to Thimphu Valley. Standing at 169 feet (51.5 meters) and made of bronze and gilded in gold, it is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world. Commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Bhutan's fourth king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and completed in 2015, it embodies a vision of promoting peace and prosperity in the region. Inside, you'll find 125,000 smaller Buddha statues, each made of bronze and gilded in gold, symbolizing the many teachings of Buddhism.

When you visit, you'll find the statue nestled in the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, surrounded by a serene environment that enhances the spiritual experience. The park, spread over 943 acres, offers a network of walking trails and scenic viewpoints, making it a popular spot for both pilgrims and tourists. You can explore the meditation hall and several pavilions where you can learn about Buddhist teachings and practices. The combination of natural beauty and spiritual significance makes Buddha Dordenma a must-visit destination during your time in Bhutan.

Recent developments have improved accessibility and facilities around the Buddha Dordenma statue to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Enhanced infrastructure, including better roads and visitor amenities, has made the site more accessible for you. Ongoing efforts ensure the statue and its surroundings remain a symbol of peace and a testament to Bhutan's commitment to preserving its cultural and religious heritage. Whether you are a devotee or a tourist, the statue offers a beacon of spiritual tranquility and cultural pride, making your visit an unforgettable experience.

At the moment, there are no entrance fees that needs to be paid either by a tourist or a local. The opening and closing hours are usually from 5AM - 5PM. For a visitor, this place is very popular and is usually a part of the tour. Get in touch with us to find out more about such places of interest.
