PLACES TO VISIT IN PUNAKHA EP 5: KHAMSUM Y.N LHAKHANG
Greetings Travellers,
My name is Kinga & in this blog you will find brief overview of one of the most popular places to visit in Punakha which is the Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Lhakhang.
Completed in 2004, this temple was commissioned by the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, to promote peace and harmony in the world. The structure, which took nearly ten years to build, showcases intricate details and murals, reflecting the spiritual and cultural heritage of Bhutan. It stands majestically on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the lush valley and the Mo Chhu River below.
The journey to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Lhakhang involves a pleasant hike through rice fields and pine forests, starting from the suspension bridge at Yepaisa Village. The trail, which takes about an hour to ascend, is well-marked and offers a serene experience amidst nature. Upon reaching the temple, visitors are greeted by a serene ambiance and a three-story structure adorned with colorful murals and statues representing various deities. The top floor of the lhakhang provides a spectacular viewpoint, ideal for taking in the breathtaking landscape of Punakha and the surrounding mountains.
Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Lhakhang is not only a place of worship but also a testament to Bhutanese craftsmanship and spiritual devotion. The temple serves as a significant site for Buddhist rituals and ceremonies, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike. Its construction aligns with the principles of Vajrayana Buddhism, and the elaborate artwork inside the lhakhang narrates stories from Buddhist mythology. The temple's strategic location and its architectural splendor make it a must-visit destination for those exploring Bhutan's rich cultural tapestry.
It is highly recommended for all visitors as the hike is not only rewarding but it also provides a sense of tranquility and rejuvenation. However, this hike is not suitable for the following categories:
