PHAJODING MONASTERY

PHAJODING MONASTERY

Greetings Travellers,

If hiking is something you look to do extensively while in Bhutan, make sure to visit Phajoding monastery. My name is Kinga and this blog briefly highly about the sacred phajoding monastery located in Thimphu.

Phajoding Monastery, located above Thimphu, Bhutan, is a significant religious site and one of the oldest monastic complexes in the country. Founded in the 13th century by Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, the monastery sits at an elevation of about 3,600 meters, offering breathtaking views of the Thimphu valley below. The site is known for its tranquility, making it a popular destination for pilgrims and trekkers alike. The monastery complex includes several temples, meditation centers, and retreat huts, which are used by monks for spiritual practices.

In recent years, Phajoding Monastery has faced challenges due to its remote location and harsh weather conditions. The aging structures have required significant maintenance, and efforts are ongoing to preserve the monastery's rich heritage. Additionally, the number of resident monks has decreased, and there have been initiatives to support the monastery through donations and volunteer work. Despite these challenges, Phajoding remains a vital spiritual hub, attracting visitors who seek to experience Bhutan's unique religious culture.

Access to the monastery involves a challenging trek, typically taking 3-4 hours from the nearest road point. The trail is well-marked but can be steep and strenuous, especially in wet or snowy conditions. Visitors are advised to be prepared for high-altitude hiking and to respect the monastic community by observing proper decorum. The monastery does not charge an entry fee, but donations are welcomed to support its upkeep and the resident monks. Visiting Phajoding offers a rare glimpse into Bhutan's spiritual traditions, combined with the natural beauty of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.
