NATIONAL SYMBOLS OF BHUTAN EP 4: NATIONAL BIRD

Ever wondered what the national bird of Bhutan is? My name is Kinga and this blog briefly highlights on the national bird, The Raven of Bhutan. 

The national bird of Bhutan is the Raven (Corvus corax),a bird deeply rooted in the country’s cultural and historical heritage. The raven holds a significant place in Bhutanese folklore and is considered a symbol of protection and power. It is revered for its intelligence and is associated with the deity Mahakala, who is considered the protector of Bhutan. The raven is also connected to the Bhutanese monarchy, as it is featured in the royal crown, symbolizing the divine protection over the king and the nation.

The raven’s selection as the national bird is not just symbolic; it also reflects Bhutan's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity. These birds are commonly found across the country, particularly in high-altitude regions where they thrive. Ravens are known for their adaptability and are often seen around monasteries and remote settlements, where they play a role in local myths and spiritual practices. Their distinct, croaking call and black plumage make them easily recognizable, and they are often regarded as omens or messengers in Bhutanese culture.

In recent years, efforts have been made to ensure the protection of the raven, given its cultural significance and the threats posed by habitat loss and climate change. Conservation initiatives in Bhutan have focused on preserving the natural habitats that sustain ravens and other wildlife. The bird continues to be a potent symbol of Bhutan's unique blend of spiritual and natural heritage, embodying the country's deep respect for its environment and traditions.

When in Bhutan, make sure that you do not confuse crows with Raven. These two birds look identical but are different.
