NATIONAL SYMBOLS OF BHUTAN EP 1: NATIONAL DRESS
Greetings Travellers,
My name is Kinga and this blog will briefly highly about the national dress of Bhutan.
The national dress of Bhutan, known as the "Gho" for men and "Kira" for women, is a symbol of the country's cultural identity and pride. The Gho, a knee-length robe tied at the waist with a belt called a "Kera," is characterized by its wide, folded cuffs and distinctive draping. Men typically wear the Gho with a white scarf called a "Kabney," the color of which signifies the wearer's rank or status. For women, the Kira is a long, rectangular piece of fabric wrapped around the body and fastened at the shoulders with silver clasps called "Koma." The Kira is paired with a blouse known as "Wonju" and an outer jacket called "Toego," creating a layered and elegant appearance.
The fabrics used for the Gho and Kira are often richly decorated, reflecting Bhutanese artistry and craftsmanship. Traditional designs include intricate patterns and vibrant colors, with different regions of Bhutan known for specific styles and motifs. These garments are made from cotton, wool, or silk, depending on the occasion and the wearer's status. Special occasions and festivals see the Bhutanese wearing more elaborate versions of the Gho and Kira, with handwoven fabrics and detailed embroidery that showcase the country's weaving heritage.
Wearing the national dress is not just a matter of tradition but also a legal requirement in Bhutan for certain public spaces and during official events. This mandate reinforces the cultural significance of the attire, ensuring that it remains a vital part of Bhutanese identity. The Gho and Kira are not just clothing but a reflection of the nation's values, connecting the us Bhutanese people to our history, social structure, and sense of community.
As a tourist visiting Bhutan, make sure you try out one of our dress from either a dress hiring shop or you can choose to purchase one. The price ranges depending on the fabric, quality and finishing. You can get a Gho for around 4,000 Ngultrum which is equivalent to USD 50 and a set of Kira for around USD 80-100. Make sure to try it once while in Bhutan.
