NATIONAL SYMBOL OF BHUTAN EP 8: NATIONAL ANIMAL

Greetings Travellers,

Be mesmerised by the unique animal called Takin which is found in Bhutan and Himalayan regions. My name is Kinga and this blog briefly highlights on the national animal of Bhutan.

The national animal of Bhutan is the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor), a unique and rare goat-antelope found in the high-altitude forests of the Eastern Himalayas. Known for its distinct appearance, the takin has a large, muscular body, short legs, and a prominent, rounded snout, giving it a somewhat odd but majestic look. This animal is well-adapted to Bhutan's rugged terrain and harsh climates, and it plays a significant role in the country's biodiversity.

The takin holds cultural and religious importance in Bhutan, linked to the legend of Lama Drukpa Kunley, a revered 15th-century Buddhist saint known as the “Divine Madman.” According to Bhutanese folklore, after a gathering, Drukpa Kunley miraculously created the takin by combining the head of a goat with the body of an antelope, giving it its distinctive appearance. This mystical association has contributed to the takin’s special status in Bhutanese culture.

Today, takins are protected in Bhutan, and they can be seen in the country's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, particularly in Jigme Dorji National Park. The Takin Preserve in the capital city, Thimphu, is a popular place for visitors to observe these animals up close. Bhutan's conservation efforts have helped maintain the takin's population, highlighting the country's commitment to preserving its natural heritage.

The takin preserve is open to both locals and tourists alike 7 days a week. Opening hours are from 9am - 5pm. There is an entrance fee payable for everyone. For tourists other than from India, the entrance fee will be included in the money you've paid upfront. For Indian visitors, you will need to pay it based on your willingness to visit the place.

WELCOME TO BHUTAN!
